Genesis 37

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. – Psalm 136:1

Growing up we used to sing a simple chorus in church called, “God is so Good.” It went like this: “God is so good, God is so good, God is so good, He’s so good to me.” It’s true, of course. God is good. “God is good,” the leader declared. “All the time”, we replied. “All the time”, the leader repeated. “God is good,” we exclaimed. Yes, God is good all the time!

Maybe it’s the definition of good. I don’t know. But it doesn’t always feel like what God is doing is all that good. Life doesn’t always work the way it’s supposed to, does it? Sometimes it doesn’t work at all like I thought it would. Many of my dreams – dreams God gave me – have ended up shattered on the floor.

I wonder if that’s how Joseph felt when his brothers sold him for a few pieces of silver. Or when his boss’s wife falsely accused him of sexual assault, landing him in prison. Where was God when all that was going on? What happened to the good dreams God gave him? A prison cell is hardly a place of prominence.

We’re learning how to trust God when our dreams are shattered. You’ll get more from the message if you read Joseph’s story. (Genesis 37-50).
